Character Questionnaire: Chey

What’s this? A post on a Thursday?

As I mentioned in my June In Review post, I’m participating in Camp NaNoWriMo this month! We’re almost 2/3 of the way through the month, and I’ve been keeping up with my goal well. Just a little under 14,000 words to go!

Since it’s Camp NaNoWriMo, I wanted to do something fun to introduce you to the two main characters from my story. The story is tentatively titled “The Show Must Go On,” and it’s a sort of companion to another novella I wrote, Summertime. You can read more about both of these projects on my newly-updated Writing page, by the way!

I was inspired by Miranda Kulig from Miranda Writes, who answered these questions for a few of her main characters. I really liked how challenging they were, so I wanted to give it a try myself! You can find the questions for yourself here if you’d like to take the challenge too.

Today, I’ll be introducing you to Chey Cooper, who plays bass in the band that’s the focal point of the story. I won’t say too much else about her for now – on to the questionnaire!

What is your characters name? Does the character have a nickname?

Her name is Cheyenne Lacey Cooper, though she typically goes by Chey (like “shay”). She prefers not to be called by her full name.

What is your characters hair color? Eye color?

She has brown eyes and dark brown hair.

What kind of distinguishing facial features does your character have?

Chey typically wears very bold winged eyeliner – it’s like her trademark.

Does your character have a birthmark? Where is it? What about scars? How did she get them?

No birthmarks, but she does have a music note tattoo on the inside of her right wrist. No scars to speak of, either.

Who are your characters friends and family? Who does she surround herself with? Who are the people your character is closest to? Who does she wish she were closest to?

Chey is an only child, but she isn’t particularly close to either of her parents. They don’t not get along, they’re just a bit distant. Sometimes she wishes she were closer to them, but she has friends who fill that gap for her. Her closest friends are Leslie and Riley, whom she’s known for a number of years.

Where was your character born? Where has she lived since then? Where does she call home?

Chey was born in a small Pennsylvania suburb and has grown up there ever since. She calls it home, since it’s the only place she’s ever lived, but it’s never necessarily felt like home to her.

Where does your character go when she’s angry?

She’ll usually storm off and go rant to one of her friends about whatever’s making her angry. She likes to vent.

What is her biggest fear? Who has she told this to? Who would she never tell this to? Why?

Chey’s biggest fear is being replaced, but I’m not sure she even realizes it herself. She tends to see anyone who finds their way into her circle of friends as a threat.

Does she have a secret?

Chey used to (and still sometimes does) get really bad stage fright. Once she’s on stage, she’s fine, but the wait right before makes her nervous.

What makes your character laugh out loud?

Chey doesn’t actually laugh out loud very much – more scoffing and snorting than anything. The last thing that made her really laugh was a Vine compilation on YouTube, of all things.

When has your character been in love? Had a broken heart?

If by “in love,” you mean infatuated with someone, then sure. Chey’s never really had a broken heart though.

What is in your characters refrigerator right now? On her bedroom floor? On her nightstand? In her garbage can?

Chey still lives with her parents, so she doesn’t have much say about what goes in the refrigerator (she keeps bottles of Starbucks frappuccinos in there, though). Despite loving her clothes, she doesn’t take good care of them, so they’re often in various piles on the floor. She doesn’t have a nightstand, but the top of her dresser is littered with earrings, bracelets, and makeup products.

Look at your characters feet. Describe what you see there. Does he wear dress shoes, gym shoes, or none at all? Is he in socks that are ratty and full of holes? Or is he wearing a pair of blue and gold slippers knitted by his grandmother?

Combat boots. Chey has a pair of Doc Martens that she loves, and she’s almost always wearing them. Occasionally, she’ll opt for flip flops, but that’s pretty rare.

When your character thinks of her childhood kitchen, what smell does she associate with it? Sauerkraut? Oatmeal cookies? Paint? Why is that smell so resonant for her?

Frozen pizza cooking in the oven. Chey’s parents never really cooked meals for dinner, so they’d often just heat up frozen meals when they got home from work. To this day, she almost always refuses to eat pizza unless it’s freshly cooked. Frozen pizza is too weird of a memory for her.

Your character is doing intense spring cleaning. What is easy for her to throw out? What is difficult for her to part with? Why?

Chey isn’t very sentimental, so she finds it easy to get rid of almost anything that doesn’t have intrinsic value. She does, however, have a hard time getting rid of some of her clothes. She prides herself on her personal style.

Its Saturday at noon. What is your character doing? Give details. If she’s eating breakfast, what exactly does he eat? If she’s stretching out in her backyard to sun, what kind of blanket or towel does she lie on?

Chances are, Chey is still in bed or, at most, has just gotten up. She might be shuffling around the kitchen, pouring herself a bowl of Fruit Loops, or lying in bed watching YouTube videos. She loves to sleep in and take things easy.

What is one strong memory that has stuck with your character from childhood? Why is it so powerful and lasting?

Chey distinctly remembers walking up to school on the first day of kindergarten. She didn’t know anyone, and many of the other kids got dropped off by their parents (she took the bus). That feeling of being the “odd one out” has stuck to her for a long time, and she never wants to feel that way again (that’s often why she gets so possessive over her friendships).

Your character is getting ready for a night out. Where is she going? What does she wear? Who will she be with?

Changes are, she’s going to a concert with her friends. Depending on the weather and the venue, she could be wearing anything from a tank top and ripped jeans to a skirt and leather jacket.

And that’s Chey! Next Thursday, I’ll introduce you to my other MC, Spencer. Until then, you can always check out my other posts about Chey, or visit my Pinterest board for The Show Must Go On.

Until next time!

  1. I really feel like I got a glimpse of what Chey is like! I like the part about pizza. I love developing characters with as much detail as possible. Best of luck with The Show Must Go On. 🙂

    • Thanks so much! These character questionnaires can be hard sometimes, but it is a lot of fun to dive really deep into their personality and background. I loved how unique these questions are, so I definitely recommend giving it a try with your own characters!
