Blogkeeping: New Schedule!

When was the last time I rearranged my blogging schedule? I think it was a few years ago. Not counting when I switched from doing Week in Review to Month in Review, it was October 2016. Fall of my freshman year of college. Now I’m a senior. Funnily enough, I seem to have found myself in a similar situation to the one I was in four years ago: My academic schedule is kicking my butt, and I need to reassess.

You may have noticed (or maybe you didn’t) that for most of September, I didn’t post anything. That wasn’t really an intentional decision, but in retrospect, I’m glad I did that. Last fall, I took a “sabbatical” from blogging for a month, and it was very refreshing. This past month has felt the same. Plus, it gave me a chance to step back and think about the best way I can continue to publish posts regularly while not getting overwhelmed.

A weird thing about blogging is that whether I write or don’t write, it can be frustrating. Sometimes words are hard, but you just have to push through and write them, and it’s like pulling teeth. Other times, you’ve just had enough with writing and you just want to lay on the couch and contemplate your existence.

All this to say, I’m shaking things up on the blog because I’m a loose cannon. Just kidding, if I don’t have a plan, I shrivel up and die like a neglected succulent. Actually, I’m giving myself even more of a schedule so I don’t have to spend all week freaking out over what I’m going to write.

First Friday of the Month: Month in Review for the previous month! The monthly wrap-ups you know and love. Nothing changing here.

First Monday of the Month: A list post! People call these “listicles” but I strongly dislike that word and I will never use it again. These would be posts like “Making the Most of Required Reading” and my “Junior Year Soundtrack.” Thoughts that are more organized in a list format. Like BuzzFeed, but better. We hope.

Second Monday of the Month: #WritersLife – in other words, updates on my writing. I’ve got plenty of projects going on right now, including one for my senior seminar class that I haven’t talked about here yet, so I’ll have a lot of material to talk about. This could look like a lot of different things – maybe a snippet from something I’ve been working on, fun facts about a character, or a Q&A session! Think something along the lines of my “Favorite Lines from Camp NaNoWriMo April 2019

Third Monday of the Month: General musings in a non-list format. The content might vary, but it would be more essay-like in form. Not that they’re actually essays. Or maybe they are? I don’t know where to draw the line. Whatever you call it, they’ll look similar to “Why Group Projects (Usually) Don’t Work.”

Fourth Monday of the Month: Tags and linkups. I’ve done these before every so often, but they’re a lot of fun and I think they would add some more variety to the blog. I’m hoping to participate in The Language of Worlds linkup often, but other months, I might do something like the Character Duel Tag.

Fifth Monday of the Month: It’s a SURPRISE! These only happen every couple months, so I’m gonna plan them as I see fit. You’ll just have to wait and see!

And that’s it! Blog posts will still be coming out when you expect them to, the content will just be a little more consistent from month to month.

As always, thank you all so much for continuing to stick with my blog. I appreciate every like and comment – they always bring a smile to my day. I couldn’t ask for better readers!

Until next time!

When the Words Won't Come

When The Words Won’t Come

Anyone who’s ever written anything has probably sat down in front of their computer or notebook, all set to write, when they suddenly realize there’s a big problem – they’ve got nothing. All the ideas decided to flee the country as soon as they saw that blank page.

The typical solution is to just start writing anyway, even if it’s slow and painful at first. Even if you have to force the words out of your brain and onto the page, before you know it, writer’s block is a thing of the past.

At least, that’s usually what happens. But when writer’s block comes back day after day and the thought of sitting down to create something makes you feel hollow instead of joyful, it might be time to consider a different approach.

Facebook Pages & Domain Names (Blog Update)

Hello readers!

Just a quick blogkeeping announcement to point out some new and exciting things that are happening around Maggie’s Musings. I’m excited to tell you about them!

First of all, you may have noticed that Maggie’s Musings now has its own domain name and URL! The blog is now located at www.mmusingsblog.com, although using the www.mmusingsblog.wordpress.com address will still redirect you to the homepage. You may also see that ads have disappeared from my website, a change I am very happy about.

Second, I’ve recently updated my “About Me” page with new photos and a bio that reflects me and my blog better.

Third, I’ve also updated my “Writing” page (again), with new subpages for my three major writing projects at the moment. The main writing page now has a list of other places where my writing has been published, with links where possible. I hope to see this list grow in the future!

Finally, I’ve launched a public Facebook page for myself and my writing. Right now, it’s a home for my blog posts to be shared, but I also hope to use it to make writing announcements, share some of the awesome blog posts I find online, and connect with my readers. Please give it a “Like” if you want to stay updated!

As always, thanks for reading my blog and always offering such thoughtful comments and feedback! It’s been such a joy to see this blog grow, and I’m excited about all of these new changes that are taking place. I hope you love them just as much as I do!

– Maggie

Blog Survey + Giveaway

Hello readers, and happy Wednesday!

Lately, I’ve been thinking about Maggie’s Musings and how things could be improved. Don’t worry, there aren’t any big, drastic changes on the horizon! I’ve just been giving some thought to my content, structure, and engagement around here and looking at ways that I can improve what I have already.

Since this blog is as much for you as it is for me though, I wanted to get your input! With that in mind, I’ve designed an anonymous survey for all of you wonderful readers to let me know your thoughts, ideas, and just general impressions of Maggie’s Musings. It should only take about 10-15 minutes, and so I encourage you to take some time and share your thoughts with me!

And, if that isn’t enough incentive, I’ll also be running a GIVEAWAY in conjunction with this survey. The official terms are below, but in short, you can opt-in to win a $5 Amazon.com gift card by entering your e-mail at the end of the survey. If you don’t want to enter the giveaway, you can leave that entry blank.

I really want to make Maggie’s Musings something that’s engaging for my audience, and so I’d appreciate the feedback! The survey and giveaway will be open until MAY 18, 2018, so I’ll be posting other reminders during that time as well.

Enjoy the rest of your week, everyone, and keep reading for more information about the survey and giveaway!

Giveaway Terms & Conditions

The giveaway will open on April 18, 2018, and close at 11:59pm on May 18, 2018 EDT. One (1) winner will be chosen at random to receive one (1) $5 Amazon.com Gift Card (USD). In order to enter, visitors must complete the survey and opt-in with their e-mail address at the end of the survey.

The winner will be drawn after the close of the giveaway and contacted via e-mail by May 22. Upon confirmation, the winner will be e-mailed a digital $5 gift card for Amazon.com. If the winner does not respond within 48 hours of being e-mailed, another winner will be drawn.

Blogkeeping: July 2017

Hello everyone! This is just a quick announcement post, because a few things are going to be changing on the site temporarily. Let me explain.

Some of you may recall that last July (and the year before that), I went on a short-term missions trip to West Virginia with an organization known as Christian Endeavor. We spent a week there doing construction work to rebuild and refurbish houses for the community there.

2016-07-08 047 WV Day 6
The house we worked on last year, including the new railing for the steps and front porch.

The summer, I have the privilege of being one of C.E.’s staff interns, which means that starting this Friday (June 23), I’ll be heading out for staff training, then spending two weeks in West Virginia and two weeks in North Carolina. My role on the staff will be mainly to run the office at our “base” in each state, but I’ll also be filling in as needed depending on what tasks need to be completed each day.

Because of the busy schedule and the fact that I’ll be away from home for about five weeks, things are going to be different around here for a while. There won’t be any “Week In Review” posts, and I won’t be able to participate in the Beautiful People linkup for July. The good news is, I still have a post scheduled to go out on Monday each week. I won’t be able to respond to comments as regularly as I do, but I’ll try to stop in when I can and say hello.

I’ll be back home at the beginning of August, so I’ll go back into my regular blogging schedule then. If you’d like to, I’d really appreciate your prayers while I’m away, mostly for safe travels, the staffers (we will be spending five weeks together, after all), and for the groups that’ll be coming to do the work.

Thank you so much for your understanding and encouragement! I’ll be sure to tell you all about how it went when I get back. In the meantime, I hope your July is absolutely spectacular!

Introverts & Extroverts Survey & Post Series

Hello readers! Today I want to tell you about something I’m really excited about that’s coming up later this month.

I’m putting together a two-part blog post series in March about introverts and extroverts. On the internet, I see a lot of articles about introverts, everything from “What Introverts are REALLY Thinking!” to “Top 10 Gift Ideas for the Introvert in Your Life.” As Blimey Cow puts it in their video, “Extroverts Are People, Too,” there was a time in the world when being an introvert suddenly became “cool,” while being an extrovert made you the antagonist.

Let’s be real: both sides are misunderstood. As an introvert, there are a lot of things that I feel are misunderstood about me and my personality, but there are also a lot of things that I don’t understand about extroverts too. That’s why I want to put this together. I want to give introverts and extroverts a chance to explain themselves to the other side so that we can better understand each other and support each other.

But since I’m an introvert, it wouldn’t really be fair or right for just me to talk about this. Instead, I want to hear from you! I’ve created a survey using Google Forms in order to hear from introverts and extroverts alike. It’s split into two sections, one for introverts and one for extroverts. Each section has the same questions, just worded slightly differently to address each group (basically, I exchange “introvert” and “extrovert” where applicable).

I’ll be using your responses in my upcoming blog posts, and I’d love to have your thoughts and feedback! If you have a few moments today, you can fill out the survey using this link (https://goo.gl/forms/SSp2BKsmbnBfNdD93). You can also click the “read more” button below to view the survey right here on the blog!

If you have any questions about this survey, feel free to comment on this post. Thank you so much in advance for taking the time to help me out with this. I can’t wait to hear what you have to say!

1st Blogiversary Celebration!

With cupcakes! (Virtual cupcakes, that is).

A year ago today, I started up Maggie’s Musings as a place for me to write. I didn’t really have much of a plan in mind at the time, and to be honest, I still don’t. But over the past year, this blog has been a wonderful creative outlet for me, week in and week out.

I began this project mostly for myself, but since then, I’ve gained a sizeable following, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you for sticking around and keeping up with Maggie’s Musings! Whether you’ve been following for a few days or a few months, I’m glad you’re here.

Special shoutouts to my family for supporting me with every post (even when it was about totally random stuff, like bad book blurbs),  my friends (both “in real life” and on the internet) for their encouragement, and to my fellow bloggers for inspiring me (even if you didn’t realize it).

Now, on to the celebration!

Housekeeping

Or is it Blogkeeping?

As I vaguely alluded to in last Friday’s blog post, there are some changes coming to Maggie’s Musings. Nothing huge, at least right now, but I’ve been wanting to try something new, so I’m going to test it out over the next few weeks and see how it works out.

My monthly “Best Of” posts are going on hiatus indefinitely. With so much going on, it’s been hard for me to keep track of what to talk about, and I haven’t been doing a great job of keeping up with things like music news or YouTube videos.

In their place, I’ve decided to do something called “Week in Review” on Fridays. They’ll be shorter posts on a weekly basis and more focused on what I’ve been up to personally. It could be school-related, TV shows I’m watching, music I’m listening to, things I did, cool stuff I found on the internet, and so on. I think it’ll be easier in the long run and feel more personal, so I’ll be starting those this coming Friday (11/4).

I’ll still be doing my regular blog posts on a weekly basis, but they’re going to be moved to Mondays. I do tend to plan them out ahead of time, but I think it’ll help to have the weekend in case I wait until the last minute. The posts themselves will be similar to what I’m doing now, just on a different day.

And finally, I’m reserving Wednesdays to participate in linkups like Beautiful People and Purposeful Pages and also do any tags or challenges, should I be tagged in any. I may reserve specific days for the linkups (e.g. the first Wednesday for BP), but for now, I’m leaving it open.

So to make a long story short, here’s what’s going on:

Monday: My regular blog posts. The stuff you’re used to.

Wednesday: Blog linkups and challenges, should I be tagged in any.

Friday: Week in Review posts, replacing the monthly Best Of posts.

As of right now, I’m not really sure how this will work out, but I’m really excited to give it a shot and see how it goes. I hope you’re excited about the changes too! Thanks for being patient with me and being such faithful readers of my blog.

See you on Friday!
