Most book bloggers like to start off the year with lists of books they want to read in the coming months. But not on Maggie’s Musings. Nope, here we talk about all of the books I don’t want to read in the new year.
I’ve sort of accidentally made a tradition of doing a purge of my “to-be-read” (TBR) books every two years – I did it for the first time in 2017 (read Part 1 and Part 2) and then again in 2019 (Part 1 and Part 2), and now it’s 2021, so I guess it’s time to dust off the old TBR list again.
But before I begin, I did want to mention three books that got kicked out automatically because they already survived one round of this and I still didn’t read them: Nerve by Jeanne Ryan (2017 Part 1), Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card (2017 Part 2), and Airborn by Kenneth Oppel (2019 Part 1). A few other old ones are still around, but they’re on thin ice.
No one wants to be sad, but sometimes, life is too much. There are days when it feels like we’re carrying an elephant on our backs, or it’s sitting on our chest, keeping us from getting out of bed. This happens to some of us more often than others, but I’m sure all of us can think of a time when we felt weighed down by life.
Not long ago, I found myself “stuck” in one of these periods, when I felt like what I described above. There were a number of things that helped me push through, but I relied on my music a lot. Music in general has always been a comfort to me, but there are certain songs that help me the most when I’m going through a hard time. I know we all have different tastes in music, but today, I wanted to share a few of my favorite songs to listen to when times are tough.
I hope you’ve all had a wonderful week, whether it’s just another week for you or if you’re spending time with family and friends for Thanksgiving. Speaking of Thanksgiving, this week I wrote a blog post with some thoughts about gratitude, so if you missed that, feel free to check it out!
This week I have a shorter WIR post (kinda like last week – oops). I’ve been spending this week getting ready to move back in at school, and I finally did yesterday, so you can understand that it’s been a bit busy around here. But anyway, more on that in a second.
On Monday, I wrote a blog post called “Talking About Things You Love.” This is something that’s been on my mind for a while, and I finally put it all into words. If talking about your passions is hard, I have some thoughts on that here.
And this week from the Musings Archives, I have the follow-up to my Top 5 Heroines post, my Top 5 Heroes. It’s always fun to put together these lists of characters and whatnot, so maybe I’ll do more sometime.
Finally, for anyone who was wondering, I had a great time with my friend last weekend! I had a safe drive both ways, and we had a good time together, talking and exploring the area. I’m really glad I was able to make the trip!
