Time-Traveling Back to 1968 | The Language of Worlds Linkup #8

Today, I’m participating in the Language of Worlds linkup, hosted by Liv K. Fisher. If you’re unfamiliar with the linkup, every two months Liv posts 10 questions for bloggers to answer about their writing projects, characters, or the writing life in general. It’s great for getting to know your story better and connecting with other bloggers, so go check it out! It’s open to anyone.

Not long ago, I shared that I’m working on a new writing project for my senior capstone class, an “alternate history” story set in 1968. You can read more about it here, but today, I’m going to be talking about one of my main characters, Valerie “Val” Harris.

Language of Worlds #3: September - October 2018

The Language of Worlds Linkup #3

As I mentioned last week, I’m taking a bit of a “sabbatical” from blogging for the next month in order to be able to restore myself creatively. I’m still posting weekly, but I’m focusing on things like linkups, blog tags, and so on – partly because I’ve been wanting to do them for a while, and partly because they don’t require as much creative energy from me.

This week, I’m participating in the Language of Worlds Linkup, which is hosted by Liv K. Fisher. The Language of Worlds is a bimontly character linkup (think like the Beautiful People linkup). It’s specifically tailored to Christian speculative fiction (sci-fi and fantasy), but it’s open to anyone who wants to participate. If you’re interested, you can read more about it on Liv’s blog.

I’ve never done this linkup before, but I decided to give it a try with Silas, a character from my fantasy work-in-progress that lacks a proper title. I won’t tell you much about him, since you’ll meet him in a minute, but here’s a quick overview: Silas is a bounty hunter that meets Myrina and Adrien in the course of their travels. He’s not very talkative, and can come off as a little mysterious, but here’s a peek into his character…

Beautiful Books – October 2017

Another month, another linkup! This October, I’m participating in another one of Paper Fury and Further Up and Further In‘s linkups, but instead of Beautiful People, it’s Beautiful Books! Every year around NaNoWriMo, they forgo the typical character-based questions and instead focus on questions about writing projects. Since I’m actually participating in NaNoWriMo this year (cue internal screaming), I thought I’d use this chance to officially introduce my NaNo novel to you.

For those unfamiliar with it, NaNoWriMo is the abbreviation for National Novel Writing Month, a writing competition that takes place every November. The goal is to write 50,000 words in 30 days, giving you your first draft of a brand new novel. Although I participated in “choose your own goal” NaNoWriMo’s in the past, going for the full 50,000 is a new experience for me, and I’m really excited.

Without further ado, allow me to introduce to you my project for NaNoWriMo this year!

Beautiful People #27 – August 2017

Another month, another edition of Beautiful People! For those who don’t know, BP is a monthly blog linkup hosted by Paper Fury and Further Up & Further In. Each month, they share a list of ten questions for writers to think about for one of their characters, and then the writers share their answers on their blog! It’s a great way for fellow writers to connect with each other, so for more information, click here.

The last time I did BP was back in June, when I introduced my character Myrina from a new fantasy-based project that I’m working on and planning to draft for NaNoWriMo this November. The plot details are still a little iffy, but I’m really excited for the story.

This month, I’d like to introduce another main character from that story, one that comes from a much different background than Myrina. This character is Adrien Bryton, the crown prince of Reystrell, which is another one of the nations in my world. He’s younger than Myrina by a few years, and under normal circumstances, it’s unlikely that the two of them would ever meet. However, Myrina protects Adrien from an attack on the palace during one of her diplomatic missions to Reystrell, and when it’s discovered that the prince’s life is in danger, it falls to Myrina to protect him while he’s a fugitive.

That pretty much covers everything you need to know about Adrien to start, so read on to learn more about him!

Beautiful People #25 – June 2017

Another month, another edition of Beautiful People! For those who don’t know, BP is a monthly blog linkup hosted by Paper Fury and Further Up & Further In. Each month, they share a list of ten questions for writers to think about for one of their characters, and then the writers share their answers on their blog! It’s a great way for fellow writers to connect with each other, so for more information, click here.

This month, I’m introducing a new character from a new story idea that I’ve been toying with lately. I’m still in the brainstorming phases, so there isn’t much set in stone, but I know enough to do this. I’m still developing the two main characters, but I thought participating in BP this month would give me a chance to work on at least one.

The story takes place in a fantasy world with (at least) six different nations (two of which still need to be named). One of the main characters, the one I’ll be talking about today, is Myrina. She’s in her early 20s and is from the country of Lamori, which is mainly mountainous with some wooded areas and some flatter ground at the foot of the mountains. She’s also a commander in the Lamorian army, which will probably come up later on.

That’s about all you need to know to start, so click to read on and learn more about Myrina!

Beautiful People #23 – March 2017

We’re back for another round of Beautiful People! If you don’t know what that is, Beautiful People is a linkup hosted by Paper Fury and Further Up and Further In. Each month, they make a list of questions for you to ask your characters. I’ve done a few in the past, so go ahead and check them out below! For more information about the linkup, click here.

BP #17 – May 2016 (Riley Taylor)
BP #18 – June 2016 (Leslie Summers)
BP #20 – August 2016 (Chey Cooper)
BP #21 – September 2016 (Trevor Johnson)
BP #22 – February 2017 (Leslie Summers and Riley Taylor)

This month, I’m writing about a character from a collaborative story I did with a group in high school during my senior year. The character’s name is Eden Hunter, she’s 26, and she’s a Sergeant in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), also known as the Mounties.

Since the world Eden’s from has a bit of a complicated background, I’ll explain it briefly. In Eden’s world, werewolves exist, but they only transform using a drug called Wolfsboon. Controlling the manufacturing and distribution of this illegal drug is a family called the Graysons, based in Anchorage, Alaska. Eden’s mother, Helen Grayson, was a part of the gang for her entire life until she escaped with Eden and fled to Vancouver, Canada. Since then, Eden grew up in Canada with her mom.

That’s all the background I think you need, so on to the questions!

Beautiful People #20 – August 2016

Aaaaand look who’s back with another edition of the Beautiful People writing linkup. I did miss July’s BP, sadly, but I’m glad to be back again this month!

If you’ve never heard of this before, Beautiful People is a linkup hosted by the blogs Paper Fury and Further Up and Further In. The goal of it is for writers to be able to share some fun facts about their characters, and give them the chance to get to know their own characters a little better. Each month, ten questions are posted and the participants answer them for one of their characters. If you’d like to learn more about it, click here.

In the past, I’ve done…
BP #17 – May 2016 (Riley Taylor)
BP #18 – June 2016 (Leslie Summers)

Since I previously introduced you to Riley and Leslie, the main characters of my novella Summertime, I thought I should use this month’s BP to showcase Cheyenne “Chey” Cooper, one of the secondary characters in the story. I don’t talk much about her, but she is mentioned briefly in chapter one of the story, and makes an appearance later on.

August’s theme for BP is “Appearance,” so before I go too much into that, here’s a quick overview of Chey: She’s a few months older than Riley and Leslie, and she’s been friends with both of them for quite a while (though with Riley much longer). She’s a musician, her fist instrument being the piano, but she’s since learned the guitar and bass guitar, and also has some vocal and percussion skills. In short, she loves music.

Actually… I think that’s really all you need to know about her for now, so without further ado, let’s get on with the questions!
